Where the work actually is: Georgetown, Berbice, Essequibo and the hinterland

Guyanese still speak as if “the job” lives in Georgetown and everyone else is waiting. That was never completely true, and in 2026 it is a bad map.

Shorebases and warehouses sit on the Demerara. Technician training was built in Port Mourant. Gas-to-energy construction is at Wales on the West Bank. Gold construction is hiring into Region Seven. Teaching and water jobs keep posting for hinterland stations. If you only refresh Georgetown Facebook groups, you will apply for the crowded office role and miss the one that is actually short of people.

Filter by region on jobs.gov.gy (the bank lists all ten regions plus Georgetown and the East Bank/East Coast splits) and keep a second search on GuyaneseJobs.com. Employers hiring in Berbice or Bartica should say so in the headline; “based Georgetown, travel as needed” is how hinterland posts stay empty.

Georgetown and the East Bank: still the office, not the whole market

Headquarters, ministries, banks, BPO-style call centres, professional services and a large share of contractor administration remain in Region Four — Georgetown, the East Bank, the East Coast. Oil-and-gas offices cluster here even when the asset is offshore. That is why a finance, HR, HSE paperwork or procurement role still often means a commute into town, and why rents and traffic are what they are.

Use the Job Bank location filter: a Georgetown call-centre post and a Berbice cashier are not the same labour market. Town still has interview density; it also has the most crowded clerical band. Technical and camp roles are often decided from where the asset is.

Berbice: training town, logistics, and a hiring catchment

The Guyana Technical Training College Inc. (GTTCI) campus is at Port Mourant, Region Six, commissioned in February 2026. Stabroek News reported President Ali calling it a central pillar of the technical workforce. By May 2026 the full 18-month oil-and-gas technician pathway was being completed in Guyana, not by sending the cohort to Canada. Phase two on the same site is a hospitality and tourism institute — a Berbice jobs story as much as an energy one.

You do not have to be a GTTCI trainee for Region Six to matter. In 2026 G Mining Ventures used the New Amsterdam Technical Institute for a job fair aimed at the Oko West gold project in Region Seven, telling Berbice applicants that NATI and the Port Mourant Technical Institute already produce people the mine can use. The company said it was looking for labourers, electricians, carpenters, masons, heavy-duty operators, truck drivers, and camp hospitality staff, with construction targeted through the third quarter of 2027. Berbice is being treated as a labour catchment, not a dead end.

A second gas project and deep-water port in Berbice remain stated government intentions. Until they hire, keep a real New Amsterdam job and set the Job Bank region to East Berbice–Corentyne.

West Demerara, the river, and “Essequibo / oil support”

People say “Essequibo oil jobs” when they mean support on the western side of the Demerara and, separately, public and resource jobs in Regions One, Two and Seven. Keep those straight.

Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase Inc (VEHSI) is a US$300 million Demerara shorebase (NRG Holdings and Jan De Nul) on Guyana’s first artificial island, opened as a marine and logistics hub. DPI listed subsea-installation support, emergency-response kit and in-country fabrication. It connects to the West Bank, Region Three — stevedoring, marine, HSE and fabrication, not Main Street offices.

Wales Gas-to-Energy, also Region Three, is the Office of the Prime Minister’s onshore gas project: NGL / gas processing plus about 300 megawatts of power. DPI, covering a Prime Minister site visit, reported about 600 construction workers then, a peak around 1,600, and a Leonora job fair of about 400 applicants (10 hired on the day). Construction peaks end; what lasts are operations, maintenance and whatever industry actually parks next to the plant.

Region Two and riverine Essequibo still run on agriculture, public services and trade. Reachable oil support is Wales / Vreed-en-Hoop, not a secret FPSO gate in Anna Regina. Still search Pomeroon Supenaam on the Job Bank for public posts.

Hinterland public jobs — and the mine that is not oil

Regions One, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten will not match Georgetown for private professional density. They do hire.

Teaching. The Teaching Service Commission’s application flow is at tscapply.gov.gy, including a preference for inside or outside Georgetown and the region you will take. Minister Priya Manickchand has said hinterland trained-teacher coverage rose from 43 per cent in 2020 to 86 per cent, with a target of 100 per cent trained hinterland teachers by the end of 2026, and that the public teaching service grew from about 7,000 teachers in 2020 to over 15,000 in 2025. CPCE open-day messaging has been explicit: more hinterland schools means more staff, with a ministry incentive package aimed at people who will serve at least four years. That is a real job, with a posting, not a camp rumour.

Utilities. Guyana Water Inc. has advertised operational posts with hinterland and Region 10 (Linden) duty stations from Lamaha Gardens. Read the station in the circular.

Gold, not oil, in Region Seven. In Bartica on 2 June 2026, President Ali said Oko West then employed 1,193 people, 946 of them Guyanese, projected to 2,100 by December 2026. G Mining has spoken of up to 2,500 through construction; a Q1-2026 company update, reported by Kaieteur News, put the on-site workforce at 1,379, 82 per cent Guyanese. First gold is targeted for the second half of 2027. That is a 2026–27 employment fact, not an Exxon vacancy.

Stay and skill up in Guyana, or use CSME?

A Certificate of Recognition of CARICOM Skills Qualification — 13 categories as at February 2026, applied for in Guyana via csme.minfor.gov.gy — is how a qualifying national takes a waged job in another participating CSME state without a separate work permit. Spouses and dependants can move with the holder. If you are not in a listed category, Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and the OECS still want a work permit.

When the CSME move is rational:

• You already hold a category (graduate, nurse, teacher, CVQ artisan, associate degree, and the rest) and a named employer in that country, not a Facebook group.
• The receiving labour market actually hires that skill — Jamaica and Barbados still absorb a lot of tourism, hospitality and BPO-style work; Trinidad still hires into energy and industrial trades, but those are Trinidad employers, Trinidad NIB and, if you lack a Skills Certificate, a Trinidad work permit. Guyana’s public job bank will not place you there.

When staying is rational: you can reach Wales, VEHSI, a Region Four yard, GTTCI or Oko West logistics from where you already live; you will take a hinterland teaching or utilities post Georgetown graduates will not; you do not yet have the Skills Certificate (apply while you work — it is a door, not a job). Use CSME when a named hospital in Barbados or plant in Point Lisas has put an offer in writing, not to dress up a WhatsApp placement.
